Biographical/Historical note
In 1971 the Sacramento City Council and the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors appointed the Sacramento Charter Commission
(originally known as the Citizens Committee on Local Government Reorganization) to study potential consolidation of Sacramento
city and Sacramento county governments. An ad-hoc committee was formed to prepare a charter to consolidate the City and County
of Sacramento. Although the charter was approved by the voters, it was eventually rejected.
The Sacramento Ad-Hoc Charter Commission in 1990 renewed the consolidation proposal of the Sacramento city and Sacramento
county charters. The Sacramento Ad-Hoc Committee submitted the revised charter to the reconstituted Citizens Committee on
Local Government Reorganization for placement on the November 1990 election ballot. The charter was approved by the voters.
