Biography/History
Poet and essayist Haniel Long was born in 1888 in Rangoon, Burma, to May Clark Long and Samuel Parker Long, Methodist missionaries.
The family returned to the United States in 1890 and settled in Pittsburgh, later moving to Duluth, then Minneapolis. Long
attended Philips-Exeter Academy, then Harvard University. He graduated in 1910. Long worked as a reporter for the New York
Globe and the Commercial Advertiser, before returning to Pittsburgh to teach English at the Carnegie Technology Institute.
In 1913 he married Alice Lavinia Knoblauch from Minneapolis. Their son, Anton V. Long, was born in 1913. In 1920, his first
book was published, Poems. In 1924 the Long family visited family friend Witter Bynner who had settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico
and spent 1924-1925 there. Following his stay in Santa Fe, Long returned to Pittsburgh. Due to ill health, he cut back on
teaching and became a part-time faculty member at Carnegie. His second book was published during this time,
Notes for a New Mythology (1926). In 1929 the Long family moved to the more therapeutic climate of Santa Fe. Santa Fe proved to be a stimulating environment
for Long. With other writers, he formed Writers’ Editions, Inc. in 1933, a cooperative dedicated to publishing works of regional
authors. Long published,
Atlantides (1933),
Pittsburgh Memoranda (1935),
Interlinear to Cabeza de Vaca (1936),
Walt Whitman and the Springs of Courage (1938) and
Malinche (1939) through Writers’ Editions. He served as literary editor for “New Mexico Writers Page”, a feature in the
New Mexico Sentinel from 1937-1939. Following the demise of Writers’ Editions, Long continued to write and published
Piñon Country (1941),
French Soldier (1942),
Children, Students And A Few Adults (1942),
The Grist Mill (1946) and
A Letter To St. Augustine After Re-Reading His Confessions (1950). Long’s ill health and that of his wife Alice spurred him to seek treatment at the Mayo Clinic in 1956 in hopes of
restoring enough of his health to allow him to continue caring for Alice. While Long was away for treatment in Minneapolis,
Alice Long died in a Santa Fe hospital and Long himself died three days later. His last book,
Spring Returns, was published posthumously in 1958.
Scope and Content
The collection comprehensively documents the life of poet and author Haniel Long, beginning with his schooling at Philips-Exeter
Academy and Harvard, his teaching at Carnegie Institute of Technology and his eventual move to Santa Fe, New Mexico where
he spent the rest of his life. The papers include manuscripts of Long’s prose and poetry, extracts from his journals and notebooks,
some correspondence, clippings, photographs, some books from his library, copies of the
Santa Fe New Mexican and
New Mexico Sentinel (Long was literary editor and contributor) and documents relating to family history. While Long maintained steady correspondences
with a number of people, his son, Tony Long, indicated that Long destroyed much of his correspondence before his death in
1956. Long also asked his friend, Dorothy Chauvenet, to burn the bulk of his journals shortly before his death. Much of the
material in this collection covers the period 1908-1956 in Haniel Long’s life. Through his friendship with UCLA Librarian
and author Lawrence Clark Powell, Long began sending his books, manuscripts and other papers to UCLA before his death. Tony
Long continued to give numerous gifts over the years, including books from Haniel Long’s personal library, articles and reminiscences
about Haniel Long, correspondence from family and friends and his own files created when he devoted much of his energy to
preserving his father’s literary legacy.
Organization and Arrangement
The collection is arranged in the following series: Writings, correspondence, journals and notebooks, personal material (including
photographs, letters, scrapbooks) of Haniel Long, books from the libraries of Haniel Long and Tony Long, subject and correspondence
files of Tony Long, water color sketches by Alice Long, writings and personal material of Alice Long.

Journals, Pocket Books, Notebooks, Miscellaneous Pocket Notebooks, Miscellaneous Journal Entries.
Scope and Content Note
Haniel Long kept a regular account of his life from 1908 to 1956 in what he generally called his journals. These journals
break down into five specific categories: Journals, Pocket Books, Notebooks, Miscellaneous Pocket Notebooks, and Miscellaneous
Journal Entries. Only the first three are Long's own titles. Box 14, 15, and 16 contain the Journals, Box 17 contains the
Pocket Books and Notebooks, and Box 18 and 19 hold the Miscellaneous Pocket Notebooks and Journal Entries.
There are two problems with dating this material. First, the entries themselves are often not dated. Secondly, the dates on
the covers of the journals and notebooks differ in many cases from clearly dated entries. Accordingly, when conflict arises,
the register takes the dates of the entries as the correct dates, and lists as well whatever dates may be noted on the cover,
the correct dates preceeding the cover dates. Whenever there are only cover dates, the register lists them followed by a question
mark and the word cover.

Pocket Books and Notebooks,
March 20, 1911 to August 25, 1956.
Scope and Content Note
There are 3 volumes of Pocket Books which start in 1934, but since most of the entries are undated it is difficult to establish
the period covered. From the correlation of entries with other dated material, it is probable that these Pocket Books cover
a span of 4 to 6 years. The average length per volume is approximately 150pp.
The Notebooks cover the period from March 20, 1911 to August 25, 1956. There are 23 volumes in a numbered series, plus one
unnumbered volume. These books are quite small (3 × 5), and average approximately 130pp. in length.

Miscellaneous Pocket Notebooks and Miscellaneous Journal Entries,
1910(?) to 1954, n.d.
Scope and Content Note
Wherever possible, the register lists the Miscellaneous Pocket Notebooks in chronological order using the same method of notation
for conflicting dates as outlined above. Those Pocket Notebooks which cannot be dated follow the dated series.
On the other hand, no attempt has been made to arrange the Miscellaneous Journal Entries in chronological order. The entries
were collected by Long himself according to subject; they seem to be entries he cut and copied out of his journals. Each folder
containing a subject, therefore, may have entries covering several dates, or may have dated and undated entries mixed together.
There are 20 Miscellaneous Pocket Notebooks and 25 folders of Miscellaneous Journal Entries. All the titles are Long's own.
