    Acquisition Information

Gift of the family of James Machado, Sr., 18 September 1998. Accession number: 1998.34.

    Collection Description

This collection consists of a map hand-drawn by Los Angeles surveyors George Hansen and Afredo Solano in 1876 on linen cloth of Rancho La Ballona, which covered present-day Venice, Culver City, and West Los Angeles. The size of the map is 64 in. x 31 in.
In the 1820s, Agustín and Ygnacio Machado settled this area, which served as a cattle ranch. The map records the division of the rancho among the heirs of Agustín Machado in 1876 as the result of a lawsuit among themselves. Annotations on the map note each heir's allotment of pasture, farmland, and beachfront. Because the map is in poor condition, it is now restricted from research use. A copy (of 1:1 ratio to the original) is used for research purposes. The copy is found in Box 1ov; the original is in 2ov. There is also a photographic negative, stored in Box 3ov.
