Biography

Parish B. Johnson, a Western newspaper publisher, became a member of the general committee which controlled the Walla Walla Union when it was founded in 1868. He assumed full editorship of the paper from 1876-1890.

Scope and Content

The papers include a diary kept by Parish B. Johnson when he was a captain in the US Army during a trip from Drum Barracks, Wilmington, California to Tucson, Arizona, in 1864. There are also 38 pieces of correspondence (arranged alphabetically by author) primarily written within the Johnson family. The authors include Johnson himself, his wife Libbie, their son Smith S. Johnson, Parish’s brother Grove L. Johnson, Grove’s daughter Josephine and son Albert M. Johnson as well as Libbie Johnson’s aunt and uncle, Mary and Park Waterbury. The subjects covered are limited to family concerns and the newspaper business in Northern California and Washington Territory. The ephemera consists of four items.
