Biographical note

J. Hillis Miller is a Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature and English at the University of California, Irvine. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of nineteenth and twentieth century English and American literature and in literary theory.
Miller was born in Newport News, Virginia on March 5, 1928. He spent much of his childhood on college and university campuses in New York as his father, J. Hillis Miller, Sr., served as both President of Keuka College and as Associate Commissioner of Higher and Professional Education for New York State. In 1944, at the age of sixteen, Miller entered Oberlin College intending to study physics. In his sophomore year, with encouragement from his future wife, Dorothy James, he changed his course of study to literature.
Following his graduation from Oberlin in January of 1948, Miller entered the graduate program in English at Harvard University receiving his Master’s degree in 1949 and his Ph.D. in 1952. While at Harvard, Miller studied under many prominent scholars including Hyder Rollins, George Sherburn, Archibald MacLeish, Walter Jackson Bate, and Douglas Bush, but found himself drawn away from traditional literary study and toward works on literary theory and criticism. His unpublished dissertation, directed by Douglas Bush and entitled “The Symbolic Imagery of Charles Dickens,” was strongly influenced by the theories of Kenneth Burke.
In 1953, after a year as an Instructor in English at Williams College, Miller was appointed Assistant Professor of English at Johns Hopkins University. He remained at Johns Hopkins for nineteen years, reaching the rank of Professor, serving as chair of the department, and holding a joint appointment in the Humanities Center. In Baltimore, Miller came into contact with several scholars who influenced his work, notably Georges Poulet and “new critic” E.R. Wasserman. It was also at the famous Hopkins Symposium in 1966 that Miller first met Jacques Derrida, and Jacques Lacan.
In 1972, Miller left Johns Hopkins for Yale University where he was first made Professor of English, and later Gray Professor of Rhetoric, Frederick W. Hilles Professor of English, and Frederick W. Hilles Professor of English and Comparative Literature. He also served as Chair of the Department of English, Director of Graduate Studies in Comparative Literature, and Director of the Literature Major. During this time, Miller became associated with a group of critics and theorists including Jacques Derrida, Geoffrey Hartman, and Harold Bloom. Members of this group were sometimes referred to as the “Yale School of Deconstruction.”
After fourteen years at Yale, Miller left New Haven in 1986 to become Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at UC, Irvine. At Irvine, Miller served on the Advisory Committee of the Humanities Research Institute of the University of California, many graduate student examination and dissertation committees, and was an active member of the School of Humanities' Critical Theory Institute, for which he delivered the Wellek Library Lectures, “The Ethics of Reading,” in 1985. Miller has also taught as a visiting professor at a number of universities, including the University of Hawaii, Harvard, The University of Virginia, Princeton, the University of Washington, the University of Zurich, Emory, Tulane, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Irvine and Dartmouth Schools of Criticism and Theory, and the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars.
Over the course of his career, Miller has authored twenty-nine books, and published more than two hundred articles. He has been a member of editorial boards for twenty-three literary journals, including Victorian Studies, ELH, Studies in English Literature, Diacritics, and The Yale Journal of Criticism.
Miller is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships. In 1986, he served as president of the Modern Language Association, and received the organization’s lifetime achievement award in 2005. In 1993, Miller received the Doctoris Honoris Causa at the University of Zaragoza, and in 1994, was made an honorary professor at the University of Peking. He received the UCI Medal in 2002 and has been a member of the American Philosophical Society since 2004.
Now a Distinguished Professor emeritus, Miller currently resides on Deer Isle, Maine in the Penobscot Bay, where he is an avid sailor, and published his latest work in 2012.

Articles, lectures, and reviews Subseries 1.2 1943-2008

Scope and Content Summary

The articles, lectures, and reviews series contains material from J. Hillis Miller’s shorter works. It includes notes, manuscripts, edited and annotated drafts, proofs, offprints, publication material, and correspondence. Because many of Miller’s essays and lectures were later reworked into book chapters, some titles appear in both the books and articles, lectures, and reviews series. Notes, outlines and manuscripts for some of Miller’s essays and lectures can also be found in his journals. Though many of Miller’s lectures presented at conferences, lectures with additional conference material were moved to the association and conference material series. Folders at the end of this series contain photocopies and offprints of Miller's published articles.

Books Subseries 1.3 circa 1950s-2000s

Scope and Content Summary

This series contains material from twenty-four of J. Hillis Miller’s longer works. It includes preparatory notes, handwritten manuscripts, annotated and edited drafts, galley proofs, correspondence with publishers and editors, as well as other publication and printing information. Three of Miller’s books, The Lessons of Paul de Man, On Literature, and Reading for Our Time: Adam Bede and Middlemarch Revisited are not represented in this collection. Because many of Miller’s essays and lectures were later reworked into book chapters, or vice versa, some titles appear in both the books and articles, lectures, and reviews subseries. Preparatory notes, outlines, and manuscripts for some of Miller’s books are also in his journals in the notes series.
Charles Dickens: the World of His Novels, Miller's first book, contains material from his unpublished doctoral thesis. In many places, pages from the original thesis have been inserted into chapter drafts for the book. This work was given three different working titles: The Mental Universe of Dickens, The Imagination of Dickens, and The Symbolic Imagery of Charles Dickens.
Materials for The Survey of British Literature were to be part of a textbook anthology commissioned by publishers Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, for which Northrop Frye served as general editor. Other editors for the project, including Miller, were to prepare introductions on certain periods in English literature and various authors. Miller’s contribution focuses on Victorian literature and authors. This anthology was never published.
Victorian Subjects, Tropes, Parables, Performatives, and Theory Now and Then are books of collected essays spanning J. Hillis Miller's career. Many of the materials date from the original publication of articles rather than their reprint date as part of a larger work. All three volumes were contracted at the same time with the same publisher.

Access

General correspondence, including email, is restricted for 25 years from date of creation. This restriction may be lifted with permission from the donor. All student and employee records are restricted for 75 years due to third party privacy issues. Boxes 66 though 72 contain material restricted for 25 years from date of creation, and boxes 76 and 77 contain letters of recommendation restricted for 75 years.

Scope and Content Summary

This series contains letters and related enclosures received and sent by J. Hillis Miller between 1951 and 2010. The bulk of his correspondence is composed of requests for letters of recommendation from students and colleagues. Included in this recommendation correspondence are a number of enclosures, including project descriptions and writing samples. While many of these enclosures have been retained, most curricula vitae, application forms, and letters of recommendation written by Miller have been restricted for 75 years due to employee and student privacy issues. Other correspondence includes letters between Miller and various colleagues, including Jacques Derrida, Paul de Man, and Harold Bloom, project and other professional correspondence, administrative memos, as well as a small amount of personal and family correspondence.

Arrangement

This series is arranged in three subseries:
  • Subseries 4.1. Named correspondents, 1951-1997
  • Subseries 4.2. Chronological correspondence, 1956-2010
  • Subseries 4.3. Subject correspondence, 1972-2010
Subseries 4.1 is arranged alphabetically by the last initial of the correspondent or the subject of the correspondence. Some correspondents were given individual folders in Miller's original filing system. These folders have been retained. Unknown correspondents or corespondents with unknown surnames are placed at the end of this subseries.
Subseries 4.3, subject correspondence, is arranged alphabetically.

Paul de Man controversy material Series 5. Bulk, 1987-1989 1942-1989

Physical Description: 0.5 Linear feet

Scope and Content Summary

The Paul de Man controversy materials series contains manuscripts and drafts by Paul de Man given to J. Hillis Miller, photocopies of De Man's wartime articles, and other later works. Correspondence, primarily from Thomas Keenan and Professor Jon Wiener, are also present. Drafts of Miller's essay "An Open Letter to Professor Jon Wiener," in response to Wiener's articles "Deconstructing de Man," and "Debating De Man," which first appeared in The Nation, are included in this series. Also found in this series are clippings of articles from popular and scholarly publications regarding Paul de Man's wartime writings.

Arrangement

This series is arranged chronologically.

Historical Background

This series consists of materials related to Paul de Man's writings from the early 1940s. In 1987, it became known that Paul de Man had written for Le Soir, a collaborationist newspaper, from December 1940 to November 1942. Ortwin de Graef found articles that de Man had written in 1942 for Het Vlaamsche Land in November 1986 and began finding articles by de Man in Le Soir a few months later. Jacques Derrida shared some of these articles in a colloquium at the University of Alabama in October 1987. In November, Werner Hamacher, Neil Hertz, and Thomas Keenan made plans to publish all of the wartime writing and sent out requests for critical responses, to be published without editorial intervention. They also made photocopies of de Man's writings available. Articles about de Man's wartime writings began appearing in newspapers and magazines at the beginning of December 1987. De Man's writings were published in 1988 as Wartime Journalism, 1939-1943, and the critical responses were published in 1989 as Responses: On Paul de Man's Wartime Journalism. The debate in newspapers and magazines continued into 1989.

Physical Description: 24.0 Linear feet

Scope and Content Summary

This series contains essays, book drafts, offprints, articles, dissertation drafts, project descriptions and proposals of J. Hillis Miller’s correspondents, colleagues, friends, and students. Many of these works are annotated, accompanied by letters or, in the case of offprints included in this series, are autographed for Miller by the author. Though dissertation drafts, especially those with attached correspondence or annotations, have been retained, completed dissertations by Miller’s students are not represented in this series as they are considered published works. A list of completed dissertations removed from this collection has been provided as part of this finding aid. Unannotated photocopies, galley proofs, and offprints of published works have also been removed. A file of works by unknown authors has been kept in this series. This file primarily contains essays about Miller and his writing, as well as a few unrelated original works.
