Abstract: Phil Townsend Hanna (1896- ) worked for the Los Angeles Tribune, Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Bureau of the Associated Press, was the editor of Bohemian Life, and secretary of the Wine and Food Society. He also wrote many books. The collection consists of correspondence, menus and other printed material relating to the Wine and Food Society of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Wine and Food Society, as well as to California wines and cooking generally.

Biography

Hanna was born on August 24, 1896 in Los Angeles, California; attended University of Southern California; worked for Los Angeles Tribune, 1915-16; night city editor, then night editor, Los Angeles Times, 1917-19; manager, Los Angeles Bureau of the Associated Press, 1919-20; editor, Western highway builder for six years beginning in 1920; art editor, 1922, editor, 1926, Touring topics (called Westways by 1934); became public relations counsel for the Automobile Club of Southern California, 1941; editor, Bohemian Life; secretary of the Wine and Food Society; wrote books, including Libros Californianos; or, Five Feet of California Books (1931), California Through Four Centuries; a Handbook of Memorable Historical Dates (c.1935), California Under Twelve Flags (c. 1937), The Dictionary of California Land Names (1951), and The Wheel and the Bell: The Story of the First Fifty Years of the Automobile Club of Southern California (1950); he died in 1957.

Collection consists of correspondence, menus and other printed material relating to the Wine and Food Society of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Wine and Food Society, as well as to California wines and cooking generally.
