Abstract: This collection comprises certificates, working papers and passports of several members of the Fischel family, and documents
the experiences of this family of German Jews who fled Nazi Germany for Shanghai, China and Palestine.

Scope and Contents note
This collection comprises documents relating to the emigration of several members of the Fischel family, German Jews who fled
Nazi Germany for Shanghai, China and Palestine. The documents include passports, certificates of birth, testimonies of employment,
vaccination records, identification card, certificate of nationalization, employment-related documentation and records relating
to post-war insurance compensation.
The majority of the documents are those of Kurt Fischel. They include employment and birth records, and identification cards
issued in Shanghai, China. The collection also includes one certificate of naturalization for Palestine is for Getrude Fischel,
and passports for Hedwig Fischel and Franziska Fischel.
The majority of the records were issued in 1935-1947, with the exception of two vaccination records for Kurt Fischel which
are dated 1906 and 1907, and the insurance compensation documents which are dated 1958.
Biographical/Historical note
Kurt Fischel was born on August 17, 1905 in Breslau, Germany. He was living in Berlin when he fled Germany in February 1939
for Shanghai, China, where he spent the war years. In 1950, he was living in Cleveland, Ohio.
Franziska Peiser Fischel, his mother, was born on February 25, 1873 in Koschmin, and left Germany for Palestine in early February
1939.
Getrud Fischel, born September 14, 1897 in Breslau, Germany, emigrated to Palestine and applied for citizenship there in February
1940.
Hedwig Fischel was born December 12, 1893 in Breslau, Germany and emigrated to Palestine in February 1939.
