Historical Note
The White Pass and Yukon Railway, from Skagway, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, started in the 1890s, and owned most of the steamboats that went up and down the Yukon River. The company's narrow-gauge trains met incoming ocean steamers at Skagway, Alaska, and transported them to Whitehorse, where passengers transferred to a stern-wheeler for the trip downriver to Dawson.
The White Pass and Yukon Railway, from Skagway, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, started in the 1890s, and owned most of the steamboats that went up and down the Yukon River. The company's narrow-gauge trains met incoming ocean steamers at Skagway, Alaska, and transported them to Whitehorse, where passengers transferred to a stern-wheeler for the trip downriver to Dawson.
TUTSHI was built in 1917. She was retired in the 1950s, and eventually bought to Carcross, Yukon, and restored. She was destroyed
by arsonist in 1990. The remains have been cleaned up and left in place.
YUKONER was built in the 1890s for Canadian Pacific. She was laid up in the early 1900s, and remained on the beach at Whitehorse,
Yukon, until the mid 1950s, when she was torn up for firewood.
CASCA was built in 1937, and was the third ship with her name. She was taken out of service in 1952, and was destroyed in
a fire on June 20, 1974 that also destroyed the WHITEHORSE.
WHITEHORSE was built in 1901. She was taken out of service in 1955.
KLONDIKE was built 1937, from the parts of an earlier stern-wheeler, also named KLONDIKE, which had ran aground at the confluence
of the Teslin and Yukon rivers. The KLONDIKE was operated along the 460-mile route between Whitehorse and Dawson City until
1955. She had become a Parks Canada National Historic Site at Whitehorse, Yukon by 1973.
KENO, built 1922 at Whitehorse by the British Yukon Navigation Company. She was the last steamer to run the Yukon River, sailing
from Whitehorse to her final resting place in Dawson City in 1960. Parks Canada National Historic Site in Dawson City, Yukon.
The collection was donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum by Richard E. Brown, on August 2, 1973. The materials were
accessioned into the National Park Service when the museum was made a unit of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA-735)
and then were transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park after the establishment of the new park in 1989
(SAFR-1).
