Description of the Collection

These records, pertaining to faculty matters, primarily salaries, were transferred from the President's Office in 1965. Most of the items were generated during David Starr Jordan's tenure as President, but one item, a letterpress book of Herbert C. Nash correspondence, predates the official opening of the University. The records include Jordan's report to the Board of Trustees, 1904, concerning faculty recruitment, comparative salaries, sabbaticals, retirement, limitation of student enrollment to 1,750 undergraduates, and the position of the Library; monthly salary rolls for 1915-1918; typescript copy of faculty minutes from 1891 to February 1904; and a bound volume of Memorandum of Appointments by the President indicating salaries, resignations, and those who declined appointments, 1891-1894. Also of note are studies by Guido H. Marx on faculty salaries, 1904-1907, with comparative figures for Stanford and University of California, cost of living figures for Palo Alto, charts, and related correspondence.
