    Abstract: William Harry Lange (1912-2004) served as Professor of Entomology at the University of California, Davis. His papers contain correspondence from 1943-1951 regarding work on insecticides and their usefulness in controlling crop pests, reprints of his articles, and some research materials related to experiments with the artichoke plume moth and wireworms.

    Biography

    William Harry Lange was born in San Francisco on September 12, 1912. He received a B.S. (1933), M.S. (1934), and PhD in Entomology (1941) from the University of California, Berkeley.
    From 1936-1944, Lange worked for the California Agricultural Experiment Station at Half Moon Bay, Salinas, and Berkeley/Davis. During World War II, he was stationed at Salinas where he worked on vegetable crop pests and on a U.S. Department of Agriculture project to produce natural rubber. He became a lecturer and Assistant Entomologist at Davis in 1946, Associate Professor and Associate Entomologist in the Experiment Station in 1952, and Professor and Experiment Station Entomologist in 1957. He retired in 1980.
    William Harry Lange passed away on July 15, 2004.

    Scope and Content

    The majority of the William Harry Lange Papers are comprised of his correspondence from 1943-1951 as well as reprints of his articles (1935-1999). Also included are research materials related to several of his experiments dealing with the artichoke plume moth and wireworms.
