Historical Note

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) was established in 1922 when the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus was located at Vermont Avenue. By 1931, twenty fraternity chapters had been formed. In 1960, the IFC had thirty-four member fraternities.
In 1940, the Fraternity Advisor Program was created by the administration to strengthen the fraternities and bring them closer to the administration. This program is currently administered through the Dean of Students Office, whose contact with the fraternities is the IFC. The IFC is the group that is recognized and sponsored by the University, rather than the individual fraternities.
