Purchase, 1991.
Royal H. Loomis was born in Oneida County, New York in 1836. By the time he was 25, he was working as a painter in East Saginaw,
Michigan, which he then left to enlist in the Union Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. He entered the service as a sergeant
on August 21, 1861 and joined Company A of the Second Michigan Cavalry. His regiment moved south through St. Louis and down
into Mississippi, where they served as part of the Army of the Mississippi. They next moved east into Kentucky, and, in early
1863, south into Tennessee, where they would be stationed for some time. The regiment fought in numerous battles and skirmishes,
including the battle of Chickamauga in September 1863. In March of 1864, Royal Loomis joined his compatriots in re-enlisting
after the expiration of their initial term of service, becoming veteran soldiers. He also received a promotion to 2nd lieutenant.
At the end of that year, he was promoted again to captain. After fighting their last few battles in Alabama, the regiment
was mustered out of service on August 17, 1865. The subsequent fate of Captain R.H. Loomis is unknown.
