Description
This collection includes a variety of local government records, mainly financial in nature: assessment and tax lists; warrants; records of licenses, expenses, deaths, mortgages, and disbursements; budgetary and public works materials; ledgers; cash books; plat books; and records of property transfers.
Background
Known at various times as Tuleburg, Gas City, Crapton, and Mudville, the City of Stockton was founded in 1849 by Captain Charles Maria Weber, a native of Germany and an admirer of U.S. naval officer Commodore Robert F. Stockton. The city was incorporated in 1850 and soon became the county seat of San Joaquin County.
