    Abstract: Uruguayan constructivist painter. Papers comprise published and unpublished manuscripts (including those by and about Torres-Garcia), sketches, charts, pamphlets, reviews of exhibitions, gallery notices, and art journals and catalogs. The collection also includes photocopies of Torres-Garcia's letters, manuscripts, and reviews. The development and impact of Torres-Garcia's art and ideas is traced through publications by groups affiliated with Torres-Garcia, including the Asociacíon de Arte Constructivo and El Taller Torres-García.

    Biographical/Historical Note

    Joaquín Torres-García was a Uruguayan constructivist painter influenced by Surrealism, abstract geometry, and Pre-Columbian art. He lived and worked in Catalonia, New York City, Paris, and Montevideo.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The papers document Torres-García's artistic development and career through unpublished manuscripts and sketches, publications by Torres-García and the groups Asociacíon de Arte Constructivo and El Taller Torres-García, and ephemera. Included are manifestoes and pamphlets, invitations and announcements for exhibitions, clippings of exhibition reviews, books by and about Torres-García, art periodicals and catalogs, as well as photocopies of letters, manuscripts and reviews.
