    Biographical/Historical Sketch

    Norman Maclean taught English at the University of Chicago for forty years until his retirement in 1973. Maclean is best known for the critically acclaimed novel A River Runs Through It and Other Stories. Wallace Earle Stegner, a prize winning novelist and author of articles and short stories, served on the Stanford University English Department faculty from 1945 until 1971 and was the founder and for fifteen years the Director of the Stanford Creative Writing Program. Donald Kennedy was Stanford's eighth president, serving from 1980 to 1992. Kennedy, holder of three degrees from Harvard, joined Stanford's biology faculty in 1960 and while on leave from 1977 to 1979 served in Washington, D.C., as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
