3. ethnic/field recordings and broadcasts

American folk 1952-1960

Scope and Contents

Like Richard Finnie, Prentice G. "Spike" Downes (1909-1959) was an explorer and ethnographer in Canada's far north, known for his work with Cree and Dene people as well as his mapping expeditions. These tapes suggest that he was also an amateur musician, and although the type of material performed is unknown, the songs appear to be related to the occupational folk songs of pipeline workers. Likewise, Lonnie Adair's choice of songs are not evident without listening (probably William Olonzo "Lonnie" Adair, 1910-2007).
