Biographical/Historical Sketch
Johnson, professor of chemistry at Stanford University, was generally regarded as one of the major figures in 20th-century
organic chemistry. He served as head of Stanford's chemistry department from 1960 to 1969, and after resigning that post,
was appointed the Jackson-Wood Professor of Chemistry which he held until he became emeritus in 1978. He died in 1995.
