Scope and Contents

Contains documentation of the Tropical Timber Campaign including programs within the Tropical Timber Campaign umbrella: Protect-An-Acre, Amazonia, Mahogany is Murder and Mitsubishi boycott. Rainforest Action Network established the Protect-An-Acre program in 1993 to conserve and protect the world's rainforests and its inhabitants through communal land title funding, marking boundaries and supporting projects that promote ecological balance and strengthen indigenous rights. The Protect-An-Acre program includes projects in Central, North and South America, Africa and Southeast Asia including the Amazon (Amazonia) Program, Brazil Program, Llana Project, and the Mahogany is Murder campaign (encompassing Central and South America and Southeast Asia) and working for protection of the rights of the U'Wa (Columbia), Sarawak (Malaysia) and other indigenous groups. Contains information on campaigns against corporations logging and using tropical timber wood products for their business practice and products, such as lumber for movie sets, furniture makers (particularly the use of mahogany), disposable chopsticks, pencils and more. Companies targeted primarily were Burger King, Mitsubishi, Georgia-Pacific and Stone Container in Costa Rica. Includes correspondence from Jose Roberto "Beto" Borges of the Amazon campaign.
