Description
Thomas Caddell (1742-1802) was born in Bristol, England. He apprenticed to London bookseller and publisher Andrew Millar in 1758, became Millar's partner in 1765 and took over business in 1767. He was succeeded by his son, Thomas Cadell (1773-1836). The firm was named Cadell & Davies after Cadell and his new partner, William Davies, until Davies' death in 1819. The business continued until the younger Cadell's death in 1836. The collection consists of letters from forty correspondents to Cadell & Davies. Most of the letters discuss books, the book trade, and publishing.
