Biographical / historical:

UCLA's International Studies and Overseas Program (ISOP) began in 1958. Formerly known as the Institute of International and Foreign Studies (IIFP), ISOP's founding functions were to promote international interdisciplinary studies and to serve as a liaison for government, international agencies, and international dignitaries and visitors to the university.

ISOP also engaged in special projects, such as the Iran Program of 1975 to 1979, a formal relationship between UCLA and the University for Teacher Education (UTE) in Tehran, Iran.

Formerly a teacher-training college, UTE became a university in 1973. UTE was interested in U.S. educational practices and began discussions with UCLA in 1975 to develop a graduate curriculum and to expand its programming . The primary goals of the Iran Program were to exchange training and provide research opportunities: UTE Fellowship students received graduate and postgraduate training at UCLA while UCLA faculty and students received research opportunities in Iran.

The International Studies and Overseas Program (ISOP) was renamed the Education Abroad Program in 19_.
