Thompson was born on Dec. 25, 1894 in Brewster, KS; attended Univ. of Southern CA, 1917-19; became writer of western novels
for young people, sometimes published under the pseudonym, Stephen Holt; international president of P.E.N., 1958-59; won Boys'
Clubs of America gold medal for
Prairie Colt in 1948, and Commonwealth Club juvenile silver medal for
Spook,
The Mustang in 1957; other publications include
Wild Palomino (1946),
Star Roan (1952), and
Stormy (1955); he died in Oct. 1987.
