    Abstract: Chula Vista Public Library's John Rojas Photograph Collection includes images of historical interest of Chula Vista and other areas of San Diego County from the late 1880's to 1976. Images document commercial, residential and public buildings, including businesses and restaurants (notably downtown Third Avenue), the fire department, theaters (such as the Seville and Vogue), schools and the public library; street scenes; neighborhoods; significant individuals including Greg Rogers and the Peters family; groups and family portraits; and annual events, such as the Fiesta de la Luna. Formats include panoramic and aerial photographs. Photographs primarily document city life and commercial activities. Of particular interest are a large group of photographs of the citrus and aircraft industry in Chula Vista.

    The collection of was a gift from Chula Vista historian, John Rojas.

    Project Information

    In August 2005, the library received an LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) grant from the California State Library for an historical photograph digitization project. The goals of the project were preservation of the images and increased public access. During the project year 200 photographs from the library's John Rojas Photograph Collection were assembled and scanned. The project was supported by the University of California's California Digital Library and the Library and Technology Act administered in California by the State Librarian.
    Project activities included conservation, photographic documentation, digitization and cataloging of the photographs. The photographs were scanned by Northern Micrographics in La Crosse, WI.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    Chula Vista Public Library's John Rojas Photograph Collection includes images of historical interest of Chula Vista and other areas of San Diego County from the late 1880's to 1976.
