    Abstract: This collection contains documents pertaining to water rights and land ownership in Riverside and San Bernardino counties during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Includes legal documents, correspondence, and other material pertaining to the Jurupa Ditch and Trujillo Ditch companies, the Riverside Land and Irrigation Company, and the Bandini Donation collected by Samuel C. Evans, a prominent businessman in Riverside, California and former president of the Riverside Land and Irrigation Company.

Evans collection on the Riverside Land and Irrigating Company was completed by undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project started in 2015. This project was funded by the UCR Library and administered by Bergis Jules, University and Political Papers Archivist, and Eric Milenkiewicz, Manuscripts Curator.

    Biographical Note

    Samuel C. Evans, born in Williams County, Ohio in 1823, was a prominent businessman in Riverside, California. He served as president of the Riverside Land and Irrigation Company and a director of the Riverside Water Company in the late 19th century. Evans played a critical role in securing the water rights which enabled Riverside to become an agricultural center.

    Collection Scope and Contents

    This collection contains documents pertaining to water rights and land ownership in Riverside and San Bernardino counties during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Includes materials pertaining to the Jurupa Ditch and Trujillo Ditch companies as well as associated land exchanges facilitated by Samuel C. Evans, a prominent businessman and owner of the Riverside Land and Irrigation Company. Legal documents, meeting minutes, business correspondence, maps, and other business records related to the Bandini Donation are also included.
