    Scope and Content of Collection

    The collection contains two photograph albums with 100 images, reproductions of Civil War era notables such as Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee, as well as Civil War sites and battle scenes. Originals were taken by photographers such as George N. Barnard, Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner, James Gardner, David Knox, and Timothy H. O'Sullivan from 1861 to 1865. The albums were produced by D. Mark Katz, Americana Antique-o-graph, ca. 1980s. UCSB copy is No. 2.
    D. Mark Katz also published a short-lived (1986-1988) magazine by the same name, Incidents of the War, for Civil War collectors and enthusiasts, and wrote related books - Custer in Photographs (1985) and Witness to an Era: The Life and Photographs of Alexander Gardner: The Civil War, Lincoln, and the West (1991).
