One-Man Shows-Gallery Artist Files

Scope and Content Note

These are files of artists who were given one-man shows organized by the gallery owners. The files contain various items dealing with all the aspects of organizing such shows. Each file will contain all or some of the following: advertising, price lists, framing costs, lists of persons invited to the opening, biographies of the artists and occasionally introductions to an artist's work in the form of a letter used for the announcement, clippings of reviews and photographs of the artist's work. The more important of these categories is listed for each artist. “Letter” means letter from the artist. Los Angeles artists did not communicate with the gallery by letter, of course, so several of the files contain none at all. Some of the files were shown to the artists at the time of the gallery's closing so that some files are incomplete. The Rex Evans Gallery did not print catalogues, therefore the listing of announcement has been used. (Many of these are illustrated, however.) For the uses of this register, the term “catalogue” refers to any printed item about an artist that a gallery other than the Rex Evans or a museum may have issued.

Miscellaneous Files

Scope and Content Note

This set of files, arranged alphabetically by the gallery owners, is here changed only slightly (Some groups of materials, such as those concerning the Nadelman show, have been extracted from these files and put into separate files elsewhere in the collection). These files contain all of the materials (correspondence, bills, receipts, etc.) used for carrying on the daily gallery affairs which were not concerned with any of the one-man shows.
The correspondence with other galleries concerning pricing and authentication is particularly rich. There is some correspondence dealing with affairs of the Los Angeles County Art Museum and there is a great deal of correspondence with several other museums, such as the La Jolla, Phoenix and Santa Barbara. The more notable correspondents have been listed here in the register. These letters range from short thank you notes, such as the one from Gower Champion, to the long letter from Morris Graves concerning his work to letters from Kay Sage Tanguy giving detailed information about dating and authentication of her husband's work.
Most information about the prices of paintings and the provenance of paintings sold is found in letters or receipts to the person buying, hence such information is scattered through the miscellaneous files. An index is not possible at this time, but the files are not impossibly large, so that a scanning of them might quickly reveal any such information needed.

Photographs and Negatives

Scope and Content Note

This box contains photographs and negatives of works of the artists listed. These works were part of the “back room” of the gallery, individual works not of gallery artists or artists who were not given an entire show at any time. The works here reproduced reflect the entire range of taste of the gallery, so often characterized by Henry Seldis as an “oasis of taste”.
The interest is broad, with perhaps a greater number of drawings than other media, beginning with nineteenth century artists such as the Pre-Raphaelites and continuing through to drawings and paintings of many of the major twentieth century artists and sculptors--particularly surrealists.
Most of these photographs were used on the printed announcements elsewhere in the collection. Other photographs were taken when the remaining items were sold when the gallery was closed. Most of these photographs also have negatives. A few of the photographs (and one file so labeled) were sent to the gallery in the hopes that it would be interested in selling the item on consignment or buying the item for resale. Most of these do not have negatives.
No titles of works are given here in the register. Most photographs are labeled on the back with title, size and media. Many of the artists are represented with photographs of more than one work. An “N” in parentheses indicates there are also negatives of the artist's work. If there is only a negative for work of a particular artist, that is indicated in parentheses.
