Subseries: A:
Administrative Overview, 1977-1985

Physical Description: 21 folders

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains the main documents relating to the founding and subsequent operation of CHEER/CERES. Along with the organization's Articles of Incorporation are the work papers and by-laws. In this subseries, one can find several general documents that provide an introduction to the organization's projects; see files, "Summary of Projects" and "Glossary." Also included in this subseries are the extant files documenting the public relations activities of the organization and publicity received by the organizations; while there certainly were additional press releases and articles published about CHEER/CERES, only a few survived and were placed on file. Some instances of publicity proved to be controversial, as was an article published by Boston's Gay Community News (1978), which aired some dirty laundry.

Subseries: B:
Memos and Correspondence, 1976-1996

Physical Description: 2 boxes, 8 folders

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains the bulk of the internal and external correspondence relating to the general administration of CERES/CHEER. Although these files contain some material relating to the research projects, teaching, and the Journal of Homosexuality, the majority of correspondence relating to those projects is filed in project-appropriate series and subseries.
While the memoranda focus on the mundane issues of academic administration, the correspondence files are somewhat livelier. A large portion of the correspondence deals with the process of academic networking and demonstrates how CHEER/CERES served as a clearinghouse for students and scholars studying homosexuality in the 1970s. Because CHEER/CERES was a highly visible organization in the 1970s, a portion of the correspondence is from individuals who were seeking assistance and advice of a more personal or political than academic nature. Correspondents include: psychologists, sociologists, administrators, lawyers, journalists, and activists; individual correspondents include: John De Cecco, Sal Licata, Michael Shively, Harry Britt, Evelyn Hooker, Jim Kepner, Franklin Kameny, Senator Alan Cranston, Charles Silverstein, and Pat Califia.

Subseries: F:
Archive of Homosexuality, 1977-1982

Physical Description: 8 folders

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains the extant records of the "Archive of Homosexuality. The Archive was the brainchild of Sal Licata, a historian who in 1978 completed the first dissertation on gay history in a United States history department. The first proposal, assembled in 1978, stated that CHEER intended "to collect, process and develop a national archive devoted to the study of homosexuality and of the experiences of homosexual men, lesbians, and other sexual minorities. This archive will be the nucleus for a cultural center which will develop eventually to express the artistic and community tastes of these groups." Although the Archive collected materials in the late 1970s and early 1980s, none of the project's grant applications were approved and the project remained without funding. This subseries contains a list of the contents of the Archive, but the archival files themselves either have been placed in the "Personal Papers" series or have been deaccessioned to the GLHTHS Ephemera, Erotica, or Periodicals Collections (see overview, "Items Removed from the Collection").

Organizations, 1973-1994

Physical Description: 1 box, 12 folders

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains files on organizations that shared a formal or informal relationship with CHEER/CERES. The most substantial of these files are the Gay Academic Union (GAU). The GAU was the key organization of gay and lesbian academics in the 1970s; the GAU had chapters around the country and it sponsored a series of important conferences beginning in 1973. In 1976, CHEER and SFSU sponsored the GAU's fourth annual conference (Symposium 1976) and the remaining administrative records of this conference are included in this subseries.

Series: 2:
Civil Liberties and Sexual Orientation Project (CLIB), 1968-1982

Physical Description: 38 boxes, 12 folders

Scope and Content Note

This series contains the complete administrative and research files relating to the Civil Liberties and Sexual Orientation (CLIB) research project. The project was designed "to study and document cases of discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or social sex-role stereotypes, in public and private institutions that render services to the public." This project was funded by multi-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. John De Cecco and Michael Shively were Co-Principal Investigators of this project. The nearly two-dozen boxes of research files form the most substantial portion of this series. There are seven subseries within this series: Subseries A. Administrative; Subseries B. Presentations and Outcomes; Subseries C. Research Tools; Subseries D. First Party Interviews; Subseries E. Second Party Research and Contacts; Subseries F. Supplementary Data; Subseries G. Document Files.

Subseries: A:
Administrative, 1976-1982

Physical Description: 19 folders

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains the administrative and financial records of the CLIB project. The most substantial of these files are the proposal, appendices, and addendum of the NIMH grant application; these files provide a clear summary of the stated methodology and goals of the research project.

Subseries: C:
Research Tools, 1968-1981

Physical Description: 2 boxes, 12 folders

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains the tools used by the CHEER/CERES staff as they conducted research into civil liberties and sexual orientation. In particular, the files document the process of developing a survey methodology and contacting individuals involved in civil liberties disputes; this subseries also includes the rather arcane files that document the coding procedures as qualitative evidence was changed into quantitative data. Also contained in this subseries are a number of files that may be of interest to researchers studying the history of institutional discrimination against homosexuals; these files include: corporate personnel statements obtained by the NGLTF, Leonard Matlovich's dismissal proceedings, and surveys of sexual orientation discrimination administered by the Los Angeles Gay Community Services Center.

Series: 4:
Sexual Assault in Prisons Project (SAVE), 1958-1979

Physical Description: 30 boxes

Scope and Content Note

This series contains the complete administrative and research files relating to the Study and Prevention of Sexual Assault in Prisons (SAVE) research project. The project was designed "to determine the characteristics of assault victims and assailants, to develop the protocol for crisis intervention, to evaluate classification and assignment procedures for protecting potential victims from potential assailants." This project was funded by a multi-year grant from the National Rape Center, a project of the National Institute of Mental Health. John De Cecco was Principal Investigator and Don Cotton and James Rudolph were Co-Principal Investigators of this project. The sixteen boxes of completed interview schedules form the most substantial portion of this series. There are eight subseries within this series: Subseries A. Administrative; Subseries B. Research and Research Tools; Subseries C. Inmate Classification Protocol Project; Subseries D. Outcomes, Presentations, and Source Materials; Subseries E. Inmate Interviews; Subseries F. Sheriff's Department Personnel Interviews; Subseries G. Pilot Interview Schedules; Subseries H. Auxiliary Jail Personnel Interviews.

Subseries: A:
Administrative, 1974-1979

Physical Description: 4 boxes, 13 folders

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains the administrative, memoranda, correspondence, meeting, personnel, and financial files related to the SAVE project. The project description and abstract files provide a succinct description of the methodology and goals of the project. The topic of male-male rape was not the only controversial element of the SAVE project; the files in the subseries document not only the funding but also the termination of funding for this research project. Other documents in this subseries demonstrate the difficulty of gaining approval to conduct research in prison settings as well as the hardships in conducting and presenting that research.

Social Sex-Role Stereotyping Project (SSRS), 1977-1979

Physical Description: 1 box

Scope and Content Note

This series contains the general files relating to the Social Sex-Role Stereotyping (SSRS) project. Unlike other CHEER/CERES research projects, SSRS was designed to create a methodology for measuring the relationship between social sex-roles (masculinity and femininity) and stereotyping and/or discrimination in a variety of settings. This series contains key elements related to SSRS including drafts of papers in which the methodology is explained. Researchers, however, may wish to examine the other research series in which SSRS methodology was employed (CLIB, SAVE, and Couples) as well as volume 3, no. 3 (1978), and volume 9, no. 1 (1983), of the Journal of Homosexuality, which featured articles discussing this methodology.

Subseries: B:
Psychology Department (PSY), 1975-1990

Physical Description: 6 boxes, 2 folders

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains the remaining files of undergraduate and graduate student research undertaken while enrolled in Psychology Department courses. The majority of files contain essays written by students based on their survey-oriented research into sociological elements of gender and sexuality; many of the research projects were inspired by research questions of interest to De Cecco and other instructors. Much more subjective than the survey-based research are the dozens of student journals and personal case studies that document the sexual lives of students and their friends and families.
