Series I. Project records, 1954-2003, undated

Physical Description: 355.1 Linear Feet (80 boxes, 370 flatfiles, 27 rolls)

Scope and Content Note

Series I documents the architectural and planning projects of Ray Kappe as an independent practioner, as well as those of the firms of Kahn Kappe Lotery Architects Planners (1970-1973), Kahn Kappe Lotery Boccato Architects Planners (1974-1978), Kappe Lotery Boccato Architects Planners (1978/1979-1981) and the work of the firm Kappe Architect Planner up to 2003.
General documentation, architectural drawings, photographs and models form this series. General documentation files vary, but may include correspondence, reports, contracts, job bids and proposals, structural calculations, receipts, specifications, and press coverage. Occasionally a small drawing or reproduction may also be included with documentation. The architectural drawings encompass plans, elevations, sections, details, and perspectival drawings, renderings and presentation boards, both originals and reproductions. The reproduction drawings take a variety of formats including diazotypes, sepia prints, photostats, and electrostatic prints. The photographic documentation principally includes photography taken at the time projects were recently completed or under construction, and includes work by prominent architectural photographers such as Julius Shulman, Marvin Rand, and Kent Oppenheimer.
The dates given here are project dates taken from Kappe's records or from the drawings and documentation of a project, but earlier and later material may be present. Locations of projects are indicated when known. For the architectural drawings, the designation "standard" refers to examples measuring up to 37" x 49", with larger drawings indicated as oversize.
The phases of Kappe's career, set out below in subseries, define his work in its independent and collaborative modes. Kappe described the work of the firms in which he was a partner as "team design," a process of interchange and compromise among the members. Within this framework, Kappe served as principal for many of the projects included in the archive, but projects on which other partners - Herbert Kahn, Rex Lotery and Clellio Boccato - served as lead designer are also present and that information is included below when known. While the partnerships' overall approach was collaborative, the exception to this methodology was the residential work, which remained solely Kappe's territory.

Arrangement

The series is divided into six subseries marking the professional stages of Ray Kappe's career as an architect in private practice and as a partner in a firm. Attributions to these subseries are taken from the block on the drawings and from a list of projects created by Ray Kappe.

Series I.A. Ray Kappe -- Architect, 1954-1969

Scope and Content Note

Projects created during Kappe's independent practice from 1954 to 1969 form the subseries. During this period, Kappe's work focused on residential structures, both single-family and multi-family, while also including a small amount of commercial and industrial building design. Occasionally, Kappe would collaborate with other architects, including Rex Lotery and Herbert Kahn, with whom he worked on the Urban Design Committee (See below Series III).

Arrangement

The projects are arranged in roughly chronological order, with undated material at the end of the subseries.

Series I.B. Kahn Kappe Lotery Architects Planners, 1970-1973

Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains projects designed by the firm Kahn Kappe Lotery Architects Planners. Herbert Kahn, Ray Kappe and Rex Lotery had begun working together on planning issues as part of the Urban Design Committee of the Southern California Chapter of the AIA in the early 1960s. This working relationship developed over time and culminated in the formation of the firm in 1970. Kahn Kappe Lotery Architects Planners had a varied practice. The bulk of its work revolved around urban design and planning studies, with some commercial and residential projects. While the firm's working methodology was collaborative overall, different partners would take the lead on projects. The partner (or associate) chiefly responsible for the design of a project is indicated when known.

Arrangement

The projects are arranged in roughly chronological order, with undated material at the end of the subseries.

Series I.C. Kahn Kappe Lotery Boccato Architects Planners, 1974-1978

Scope and Content Note

The projects of Kahn Kappe Lotery Boccato Architects Planners form this subseries. In 1974, the earlier firm of Kahn Kappe Lotery Architects Planners transitioned when Clelio Boccato, who had previously been an associate, became a partner. In the same year, Herbert Kahn started a private practice in Santa Cruz, although he continued to work on the firm's Los Angeles projects. In 1976, Kahn opened a Santa Cruz office of Kahn Kappe Lotery Boccato Architects Planners, before leaving the partnership entirely in 1978. During this period from 1974 to 1978, the firm continued the earlier emphasis on on urban design and planning, including several projects aimed at revitalizing the cities of Inglewood and Compton and studies addressing transportation issues, such as the Downtown Peoplemover. The firm also created a small body of residential, institutional and industrial designs. While the firm's working methodology was collaborative overall, different partners would take the lead on projects. The partner (or associate) chiefly responsible for the design of a project is indicated when known.

Series I.D. Kappe Lotery Boccato Architects Planners, 1978-1981

Scope and Content Note

The 1978 departure of Herbert Kahn led the firm to transition in 1979 to Kappe Lotery Boccato Architects Planners, the work of which forms this subseries. The firm continued to produce urban design and planning studies, but residential work now played a greater role. This decline in planning study work, due to the City of Los Angeles shifting from commissioning studies to actual implementation, eventually led to the dissolution of the firm in 1981. While the firm's working methodology was overall collaborative, different partners would take the lead on projects. The partner (or associate) chiefly responsible for the design of a project is indicated when known.

Arrangement

The series is arranged into four groupings: SCI-Arc, Cal Poly Pomona, miscellaneous and sealed materials. The large section of Sci-Arc material is further subdivided by topic.

Series III. Other professional papers, 1959-2007, undated

Physical Description: 11.7 Linear Feet (16 boxes, 1 flatfile)

Scope and Content Note

The series is comprised of materials relating to a broad range of Kappe's professional activities and affiliations. It includes awards and honors received, professional service and memberships, office records, Kappe's writings and lectures and reference materials. Of particular interest are the materials relating to Kappe's work with the Urban Design Committee of the Southern California Chapter of the AIA. It was within the context of this committee from circa 1963 to 1969 that Kappe developed relationships with Herbert Kahn and Rex Lotery and found that they shared similar approaches to urban design and planning, especially as regards social and housing issues. Collaboration on committee studies, including the Gray Area Study and the Circulation Distribution Study for the Community Redevelopment Agency, led to the formation of their partnership in 1970. The series also contains newspaper and magazine articles that Kappe assembled over the course of his career that chronicle both his work as well as his professional interests. Due to water damage, access to some items in this series may be limited.

Arrangement

The series is arranged by topic.
