Summary: These papers largely pertain to Edwards' professional career and
to his administrative positions with Stanford University. Papers relating to Stanford,
1940-1986, include correspondence and supporting documents from his tenure on the Board
of Trustees (1943-1962), especially during his term as president, 1948-53; articles
about Edwards; and a file of correspondence with Profs. Harold Fisher and Ernest
Hilgard, 1952-1954. Professional papers include his speeches, essays, and editorials;
original poetry and plays; and extensive correspondence with other journalists and
newspaper editors. Correspondents include Alfred O. Anderson, 1910-1937; Will B. Colver,
1920-1925; Roy Howard, 1921-1956; E. T. Leech, 1919-1922; Lowell Mellett, 1926-1931;
Robert F. Paine, 1909-1929; E. W. Scripps, 1911-1917; Robert P. Scripps, 1919-1932; Max
Stern, 1924-1932; and Basil Woon, 1917-1919. Also included are several childhood letters
by Edwards, 1895-1896; high school essays, 1901-1903; letters pertaining to a student
prank at Stanford, 1908; and his typescript memoirs.

Biographical/Historical Sketch
Paul C. Edwards studied journalism at Stanford from 1902-1906 and went on to become,
successively, reporter, city editor, and managing editor of the San Francisco News.
After a few years working as editor on the Dallas Dispatch, and as founding editor on
the Houston Press, the Scripps-Howard Newspapers made him Southwestern Group
editor-in-chief in 1919 and, in 1922, head of the California Group. In 1925 he became
editor of the San Diego Sun. From 1932 to 1956, he served as associate editor of the San
Francisco News.
Mr. Edwards took an active interest in Stanford affairs, serving in the 1930s and 1940s
as chairman of the Annual Appeal Committee of the Stanford Fund, as a member of the
Board of Governors of the Stanford Associates, and as President of the Associates
beginning on October 28, 1941. In October of 1943 he was appointed to the Stanford Board
of Trustees. He served as President of the Board from May 1948 until October 1953 when
he was elected trustee emeritus.
