Biography/History
Colonel Oscar Vaughan Viney (1886-1976) lived at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant
(D.L.). He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.). He also held the position of High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire in
1950. In the latter half of his career, Viney was the chairman of the Hazel-Sun Group, formed from the family firm of Hazell
Watson & Viney of Aylesbury. In 1962 the firm obtained the contract to produce the first-ever weekly color magazine for a
British newspaper,
The Sunday Times Colour Magazine.
Elliott Merriam Viney (1913-2002) was the son of Colonel Oscar Vaughan Viney. He served in the British Army in World War II.
He was invested as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) and as a Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.).
In addition to holding the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.), he was decorated with the award of Companion, Distinguished
Service Order (D.S.O) and with the award of Territorial Decoration (T.D.). Major E.M. Viney also held the title of High Sheriff
of Buckinghamshire in 1964; he published a book on the history of the position,
The Sheriffs of Buckinghamshire, in that same year.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of four volumes with holograph and typed listings of some 290 titles on mountaineering, from 1633-1937,
with additions to 1963, in English, French, German, Norwegian, Swedish, and Latin. The fourth volume is a supplementary authorial
index. The enumerative list is a catalogue of the mountaineering library that belonged to Colonel Oscar Vaughan Viney and
his son Major Elliott Merriam Viney at Walton Cottage & Bierton House & Green End House.
Organization and Arrangement
Three of the four volumes are divided alphabetically. The fourth volume is an authorial index which is was provided as a supplement
to the entries found in the other three.
