period between 1969-1978. A large majority of the files relate to the first Third World Studies course facilitated in Fall
1970.

The Third World Studies Program was established and organized in 1969 in Third College, which is now named Thurgood Marshall
College. The program was constructed to represent a curriculum recognizing marginalized peoples' histories and to bridge the
gap between campus and community by emphasizing community service leadership. Students completed core courses, initially including
Black American History and Culture Sequence, Urban and Rural Development, as well as Chicano Studies or Black American History
elective tracks. The San Diego Division of the Academic Senate approved the Third College Academic Plan, including the Third
World Studies program in 1969. Faculty and Third World Studies Coordinator Carlos Blanco Aguinaga were instrumental in the
initial planning sequences of the course outlines and core material selection. Blanco Aguinaga also helped support the development
of the Chicano Studies major beginning in 1973.
