Abstract: This collection contains standard and oversized photographs and renderings of the buildings, layout, and surrounding area of University of California, Irvine. Included are a chalk drawing and a watercolor painting of the Centrum and an ink drawing of the Fine Arts village, neither of which were built. Also included is an aerial painting of UCI, centered on Alrich Park, featuring the six schools built around Ring Road. The photographs include aerial views of campus and the surrounding area, shots of individual buildings, and images depicting students and campus life. A considerable number of photographs feature the UCI Medical School. One folder of photographs depict Frank Gehry's Engineering and Computer Science building before its demolition and replacement.

Donated by Robert Vircsik, 2006. Donated by the ICS Development Office, 2005. Other sources and dates unknown. The Special Collections and Archives staff created this artificial collection by compiling photographs and renderings relevant to UCI's early history.

Historical Background

Some of the photos in this collection were donated by Robert Virscik, who was a construction supervisor for several of the early buildings at UCI. The photographs of the original Computer Science and Engineering Building were donated by the Assistant Dean Ron Hubbard shortly before the building was due to be demolished and replaced. This building was designed by Frank Gehry, a world-renown architect known for structures such as the Walt Disney Concern Hall. The rest of the collection was accrued from other unidentified, undated sources.

Photographs Series 1 1963-1986

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains photographs of UCI's buildings, campus life, and surrounding area. Chronologically, the photos begin in 1963 with an aerial photograph of the future home of UCI and end in 1986 with photographs of the growing UCI Medical School. This series also includes Frank Gehry's Engineering and Computer Science Building and the old University Center--both of which have been demolished and replaced. The source of many of the photographs cannot be determined.
