Administrative History
The Campus Planning Office is responsible for facilitating and coordinating long-range academic, fiscal and facilities planning
activities and for assisting the campus and its component parts to achieve their goals and objectives.
The Campus Planning Office has undergone numerous changes in reporting line, scope and organization. It began in early 1965
as a part of the Office of the Chancellor and was staffed by five members of the Office of Architects and Engineers. In August
1969, Chancellor McGill created the Office of the Director of Planning and appointed Werner Lendenmann as director. The Director
of Planning reported to the Chancellor until 1974 when the reporting line shifted to the Vice Chancellor for Administration.
Lendenmann was promoted to Assistant Chancellor for Planning and later Associate Chancellor for Planning. In 1981 the office
was renamed the Office of Planning and Budget and Werner Lendenmann served as associate director. In 1984, Jeffrey Steindorf
succeeded retiring Werner Lendenmann and the office name changed to the Campus Planning Office.
Scope and Content of Collection
The records of the Campus Planning Office contain agendas, meeting minutes, notes, agenda item documentation, and recommendations
to the Chancellor. The materials date between 1970 and 1984 with a gap in holdings occuring from January 1970 to August 1971
and from June 1979 to July 1982. The records are organized in two series: 1) ADMINISTRATIVE FILES and 2) PROGRAM REVIEW COMMITTEE
FILES.
SERIES 1: ADMINISTRATIVE FILES
The Campus Planning Office ADMINISTRATIVE FILES contain material related to academic and facilities planning at UCSD between
1956 and 1984, including the development of master plans, new programs, capital outlay, and buildings. The bulk of the files
date from 1970 and include budget materials, ethnic statistics, workload data, student faculty ratios, and registration statistics.
Also included are materials related to the planning of Third College (Thurgood Marshall College), Fourth College (Earl Warren
College) and Fifth College (Eleanor Roosevelt College). The files are arranged alphabetically.
SERIES 2: PROGRAM REVIEW COMMITTEE FILES
The addition to the Campus Planning Office includes documents from the PROGRAM REVIEW COMMITTEE (PRC) and subsidiary subcommittees
from 1970-1984. The series contains records created by the committee's executive secretary, Werner Lendenmann, Director of
Planning at UCSD. The PRC's goal is to review all instructional, research, and public service programs of the general campus,
operating budget issues, and priorities for capital improvement, as well as all supporting programs. Materials include agenda
and meeting minutes for the various committees and task forces. The series contains nine subseries of subcommittees and is
arranged alphabetically by title of subcommittee.
