Biographical Information

Estelle Goodman Levy was born in El Paso, Texas, where her father, Aaron, owned the Lion Grocery Company. Her grandfather, Parez Levy, was an optician in Nashville, Tennessee. She attended Science Hall in Shelbyville, Kentucky and graduated from Throop Academy in Pasadena, now the California Institute of Technology, in 1910. Estelle returned to El Paso and married Charles Levy in 1916. She was active in the political, civic, social, historical, philanthropic and Jewish life of El Paso and the Southwest, belonging to Mount Sinai Temple and many other local organizations including: the National Council of Jewish Women; the Texas State Federation of Sisterhoods; the Women’s Club of El Paso; the Red Cross; the Parent Teachers Association; and the Cloudcraft Recreation Camp baby sanitarium. With Isidore Bernard and Fanny Sattinger Goodman, two of her relatives, Estelle supported the El Paso Historical Society and contributed articles to its quarterly. Estelle Levy’s daughter, Amelia Rose, moved to Oakland, California in 1966 and married Edgar Guy Lemmon, Jr. in 1967.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains the following: a few items relating the life of Parez Levy in Tennessee, including a scrapbook and a Masonic certificate; items relating to the life of Aaron Goodman in El Paso, Texas, including family scrapbooks with documents and correspondence from Aaron's Lion Grocery Company and an 1889 legal document (in Spanish) relating to a Goodman's interests in a mine in Juarez; the handwritten diaries of Estelle Goodman Levy (Aaron's daughter); a wedding book and marriage certificate from the wedding of Estelle Goodman and Charles Levy; a number of scrapbooks documenting the life of Estelle Goodman Levy in El Paso; and a significant number of items relating to the life of Amelia Levy Lemmon, including 48 scrapbooks and photo albums dating from Amelia's school years through 2003. These document Amelia's experience at UC Berkeley and in the San Francisco Bay Area, her activities in the Sisterhood of Oakland's Temple Sinai and in the Brandeis University National Women's Committee, and her travels around the world. Amelia's childhood is also documented in the Goodman family scrapbooks in the collection. The collection includes genealogical information about members of the Goodman, Levy, Frank, Lederer, Baruch, Brandt, Schenck, and Sattinger families. Also included are some historical writings, including "My Parents, Joseph Hillel Goodman and Sarah Rothschild Goodman" by Isidore B. Goodman and "In the Beginning: The Jewish Community of El Paso Texas" by Fanny Sattinger Goodman.

Material relating to Aaron Goodman, Amelia Levy Goodman, and Estelle Goodman. Business documents include invoices of family grocery stores, business letters and statements for: P. Levy and Company, Nashville, Tennessee; A. Goodman at Earlham, New Mexico; El Paso Grocery Co. Also included are clippings re Lion Grocer Co., El Paso. (The El Paso Grocery Co. of 1903-1904 was Goodman Produce Co.; in 1907, perhaps the Southwestern Commercial Co.; by 1911 the Lion Grocery Co.. Family papers included are telegrams on the occasion of the 1890 wedding of Aaron and Amelia; wills for Amelia Levy Goodman and Aaron Goodman; obituaries; and some masonic material for Aaron Goodman. The scrapbook also includes personal correspondence. Among the correspondence is a letter dated 15 May 1878, from Esther Goodman, Amelia’s sister and first wife of Aaron Goodman, to her mother Rosa Levy. (Esther presumably died in childbirth before 1890). Refers to Pauline and Jacob (perhaps her sister Pauline and her brother J. W. Levy). Genealogy note: It is possible that this is the Pauline who became Mrs. Joseph Frank and later Mrs. Edward Lederer. Pauline and Joseph’s son, Perry Frank (Sr.) married Amelia Baruch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hartwig M. Baruch and niece of Bernard Baruch. In 1934, Amelia Baruch Frank divorced Perry Frank Sr. and in 1937 married Polan Banks, a writer, in Havana. They were later divorced. Perry Frank Sr. and Amelia Baruch Frank had a son, Perry Frank Jr., of the New York Times advertising staff and American Broadcasting Company. Perry Frank Jr. married Joanne Schenck, daughter of Loew’s president, Nicholas Schenk (1931?), who later divorced him and married Robert Brandt. Perry Frank Sr. married Dora (Doree?), who already had two children. Charles Levy, who married Estelle Goodman, was a cousin of Perry Frank Jr. J.W. Levy, brother of Amelia Levy Goodman, of Nashville, Tennessee and Union City, Tennessee, was connected with Friedman and Levy store that by 1881 had become New York Store. Photos in the scrapbook include images of the Frank family, Rosa Levy, Leonard Goodman Sr. (Estelle Goodman Levy’s brother and son of Amelia Levy Goodman and Aaron Goodman), Amelia Levy Goodman and L.S. Cunningham, friend of Aaron Goodman.
