Biography

Stanley Fuller Bailey was born August 1, 1906 in Middleboro, Massachusetts. He graduated with a degree in Entomology from the University of Massachusetts in 1929 and received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1931.
He joined the staff of the University of California, Davis as a junior Entomologist and over a period of thirty-six years advanced to full professor. His research focused on agricultural entomology, specifically bean thrips, pear thrips and the peach twig borer.
During World War II, Bailey accepted a commission as Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps of the U.S. Navy and served in North Carolina, Florida, and the Central Pacific Theater, eventually attaining the rank of Captain. After the war he returned to the University of California, Davis to become head of the Department of Entomology (1946-1957) and to continue his teaching and research in agricultural entomology. Most of his later work focused on the California mosquito vectors of encephalitis and malaria.
Bailey passed away on April 19, 1981.
