Scope and Content Note

This series contains anniversary booklets, constitution and by-laws, minutes of the Board of Directors meetings of the SFJCC (1933 through 1967, missing 1963) and the UJCC (1960 through 1970), minutes from the SFJCC Executive Committee (1933 through 1966, missing 1961 - 1964), and other material related to Board activities. There are also files on the Board of Trustees, another corporate body, as well information from planning committees established prior to the SFJCC's official incorporation.

Scope and Content Note

The material in this series concerns the activities of the Young Men's Hebrew Association both prior to and after the SFJCC's incorporation. The bulk of the files, though, date from 1917 to 1933. A souvenir program from 1903 provides a glimpse of the scope of the Y at the turn of the century. Included are financial and membership reports, corporate documents, newsletters, and program materials. The oldest document in the collection is a program from a YMHA production of the cantata "Esther" held at the Grand Opera House in 1878. YMHA materials can also be found in Series IV: Financial, Series VII: Photographs, and Series VIII: Scrapbooks.

Arrangement

These are the administrative office files pertaining to the construction of the California Street facility, its maintenance, furnishings, and renovation. There is one file containing materials on the YM-YWHA building at 121 Haight Street, including damage to the building during the 1934 general strike. At the time it was rented to Worker's International Relief, an organization alleged to engage in "communistic" activities.

This series consists of two boxes of photographs of the YMHA and the San Francisco JCC. The YMHA photographs date from 1916 through 1933 and include interiors and exteriors of the organization's Haight Street building, group portraits, and photographs of YMHA activities and events (including dramatic productions, physical education, and community Passover Seders).
