Scope and Content
Papers regarding the controversy between the Free Speech Movement (a coalition of campus student organizations) and the University
of California, Berkeley administration in 1964-1965 after the administration's extension of rules banning political advocacy
on campus to include tables set up just outside the gate at Bancroft and Telegraph. The Papers were collected by the Center
for Research and Development in Higher Education during and immediately after the confrontation for studies done by the Center.
Included are documents or copies of documents representing all sides of the controversy with most material bound in black
binders. The binders and other material are arranged in 9 series: Administration, Regents, Faculty, Students, State Officials,
General Public, Subject Files, Center for Higher Education Studies, and Clippings. Cartons 1 and 2 have been rearranged and
described for easier access; however, clippings in Cartons 3 and 4 are in original transfer condition.
