Abstract: Charles Edmund Haas (1873-1960) was a clerk in the U.S. State Department (1905-06), Los Angeles deputy city attorney (1907-13), deputy county counsel (1913-18), judge, Los Angeles Municipal Court (1926-31) and later a presiding judge (1948), Los Angeles Superior Court. The collection consists of biographical materials on Judge Haas, several articles written by him and a bound typescript of his autobiography, California Reverie.

Biography

Haas was born April 15, 1873 in California, Missouri; BA, Stanford University, 1898; LL.B., DGS, George Washington, P.G. Olympic, 1931; high school teacher (1895-1905); clerk, U.S. State Department (1905-06); Los Angeles deputy city attorney (1907-13); deputy county counsel (1913-18); judge, Los Angeles Municipal Court (1926-31); became a judge, and later a presiding judge (1948), Los Angeles Superior Court; president, Avocado-Citrus Company; vice president, Dell-Osso Mining and Milling Company; lecturer on law, radio stations KFI and KECA; lecturer on California history, KRKD; wrote a book, Lawyers I Have Known and Their Cases (1953?) and an autobiography entitled, California Reverie; died in 1960.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of biographical materials about former Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charles Edmund Haas and several manuscripts of articles written by Judge Haas. Includes a bound typescript of his autobiography, California Reverie.
