Description
Matsunosuke Oi was born in 1885 in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. He arrived in the United States in 1906 and was a merchant and community leader in Southern California and an active officer in various Japanese associations including being a founding member of the postwar Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California. A bulk of the collection is about his participation in that association. The collection also includes materials related to his life: personal papers including manuscripts of his autobiography, correspondence related to the seizure of Oi's properties during his wartime internment, and a scrapbook with newspaper clippings from the local press. Some materials in the collection are in Japanese.
