This collection was transferred from Golden Gate National Recreation Area to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

Historical or Biographical Note

The JOHN B. COLLEY was a bark built in 1847 in Norfolk, Virginia. The collection material covers a voyage from Norfolk on March 8, 1849. She arrived San Francisco on December 10, 1849, carrying 29 passengers and 12 crew, under command of Captain William Smith. The voyage was apparently quite miserable for passengers. Other records show the bark calling in New York in 1852,; and later it arrived at Astoria, Washington on March 7, 1854, from New York. Final disposition of the vessel is unknown.

COLLEY (bark) logbook (SAFR 13573, HDC 27) is comprised of a single volume sea journal written by an unidentified author during a voyage from Norfolk, Virginia to San Francisco, California on the JOHN B. COLLEY (bark) in 1849. This collection has been processed to the collection level and is open for use without restrictions.
In 1849, the JOHN B. COLLEY departed from Norfolk, Virginia destined for San Francisco,California.This sea journal was kept by an unidentified author. The title is "A Tribute to those life-lasting feelings of Disgust, Contempt and Scorn Unanimously entertained, By the Passengers, Officers and Crews of the Bark John G. Colley; For Captain William Smith of New York." The journal begins with a letter to the "Passengers, Officers and Crew, and Fellow Sufferors & to Thomas P. Johnson, Esquire." It is signed by "The Author." The tribute is in two parts and is composed of rhyming verse.
