Biographical Note
Formed in 1975, the architectural firm of Peters, Clayberg & Caulfield was based in the Bay Area of California, moving their
office from San Francisco to Oakland in the early 1980s. In 1967, Richard Peter and Richard Clayberg partnered together and
created Peters & Clayberg firm, later joined by Thomas Caulfield. Important projects include the home of Jerome C. Falk in
Berkeley, California; the Library for Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California; and Saint Mary's Gardens in Oakland,
CA.
Richard C. Peters, FAIA, taught at the University of California, Berkeley for 35 years and held the position of Chairman of
the Department of Architecture and Director of the Graduate Thesis Studios. Peters served as a Director of the San Francisco
Chapter of the A.I.A and is a past president of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture [ACSA]. He was a partner
in the architectural firm Peters, Clayberg, and Caulfield which won National and Local AIA Awards for projects including St
Mary's Gardens senior housing, 1981. In his life Peters became very close friends with Williams and Catherine Wurster leading
him to co-author The House of William Wurster, Frames for Living with Caitlin Lempres Brostrom. (Princeton Architectural Press:

Richard M. Clayberg, AIA, (1986) graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in Architecture from UC Berkeley where he served as president
of the Architecture Students Association. He partnered with Richard Peters to form the firm Peters & Clayberg in 1967 which
became Peters, Clayberg & Caulfield in 1975. Clayberg had the good fortune to travel the world with a special interest in
Japan, Cambodia, India, the Arab Middle East, and Greece.
Architect Thomas J. Caulfield was born in 1940 near Redding, CA, and grew up in Santa Rosa, California. He received his BA
in architecture at UC Berkeley in 1964 and worked as an architect in the UK, Italy, and Libya before returning to the U.S.
During his 44 years of practice he was a principal in three architectural firms: Muller & Caulfield Architects, Caulfield
Architects, and Peters, Clayberg & Caulfield. He died in October 2007.

Arrangement
This collection is organized into two series: Series I. Office Records and Series II. Project Records. Series I. Office Records
includes awards and photographs of Peters, Clayberg, & Caulfield. Series II. Project Records consists of manuscripts (such
as project notes and correspondence), photographs, and drawings.
Scope and Contents
This collection documents the architectural work of the firms Peters & Clayberg and Peters, Clayberg, & Caufield, with the
bulk of the collection regarding Peters, Clayberg, & Caufield. Organized into two series: Series I. Office Records and Series
II. Project Records; this collection spans 7 cubic feet and dates from 1960 through 1989. The Peters, Clayberg & Caufield
Collection is comprised of Office Records which take the form of both national and local AIA awards received between 1965
and 1989 and photographs of the firm. Project records, in the form of manuscript material, drawings, and photographs, document
projects of both Peters & Clayberg and Peters, Clayberg, & Caufield. These projects were designed by both firms themselves
and in collaboration with other notable designers, including Charles Moore and Richard Vignolo. Notable projects present in
the collection include St. Mary's Gardens in Oakland, CA; the Graduate Theological Union Library in Berkeley, CA; and the
Jerome B. Falk Residence in Berkeley, CA; Lorenzo and Graham Residence in Berkeley, CA.
Custodial History
Donated to the Environmental Design Archives by the Peters, Clayberg, & Caulfield firm in response to a request by Richard
Peters.
