Scope and Contents

Artificial collection of material related to theater, motion pictures, and other performing arts, mainly consisting of photographs, magazines, and scrapbooks, largely from the later 19th to mid-20th century.
The first three series contain the bulk of the collection. Series 1 consists of a distinct collection of actor portraits mostly from the 1880s through the 1910s, many of which are signed. A number of photos have written references to pages in the scrapbooks in Series 2, which were once owned by Samuel Stark.
Series 3 contains a large number of movie fan magazines mostly from the 1930s and 40s in variable condition. These also appear to be from multiple sources but were probably given to Stanford as a group (again, possibly by Stark).
This collection contains most of the undescribed remainder of Stanford's theater-related archives, once a major collecting area. Many are listed in our catalog via this link: https://stanford.io/2QRVCTJ

Series 1. Actor portraits circa 1867-1921

Scope and Contents

This series contains a more or less distinct collection of late 19th-early 20th century studio portraits of actors of the American and British stage, as well as some early film stars. Collection also includes photos of singers, dancers, acrobats and other performers in music hall, opera, vaudeville, and burlesque. Prints take the form of cartes des visite, cabinet cards, mounted prints, and loose albumen prints, but most have thick cardboard mounts and the majority are autographed or inscribed.
Original owners include Henry Cottrell, Hattie Hecht Sloss, Samuel Stark, J. J. Gottlob, Billy Irvin, and Lester Fountain. Images are primarily the work of photographers who specialized in the theatrical trade, especially Napoleon Sarony, B. J. Falk and José Maria Mora in New York, and Alfred Ellis in London. San Francisco photographers include Terkelson & Henry, Houseworth, Taber, and Bradley & Rulofson.
Many photographs include references to related pages in scrapbooks devoted to actors in Series 2 (i.e. "Book A-2 p.45").

Series 2. Actor scrapbooks

Scope and Contents

This series of scrapbooks of theater and motion picture actors was once owned (if not originally assembled by) Samuel Stark, donor of the majority of Stanford Library's theater collections. However, it does not appear to be related to the Sam Stark Scrapbook Collection, 1860-1950 (M0622) https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/ft5g5003wk. The majority of images are clipped from magazines, although there are also prints, newspaper articles, handwritten & typed notes, programs, handbills, and loose material. Material was gathered through at least 1959, but most are from the first several decades of the century. Some pages or images are autographed. The albums are organized by last name. Unfortunately, most of "R" through "Z" appears to be missing.

Series 3. Movie fan magazines circa 1917-1965

Scope and Contents

Classic era fan magazines, mostly from the 1930s and 40s. Condition is generally poor; many are missing covers, have torn pages, and are marked up with doodles and other defacement (apparently drawing mustaches on femme fatales was a popular pastime). A few issues are very clean, however. Many can be found online at the Media History Digital Library (http://www.mediahistoryproject.org/)

Series 6. Movie programs

Scope and Contents

Programs have been minimally described with only the most basic information captured, i.e. titles, places and dates when present. Material includes programs, handbills, studio promotional brochures, press releases & press kits. Most date from around 1909 through the mid-1970s. Some items have been separated from related material.
Motion picture programs are divided into two series; one by theater and one by title. Silent-era films were often part of larger programs including vaudeville, music, or other performances. There are also a few programs for theater alone in this series. Some files are promotional and souvenir booklets produced by studios. Some Warner Brothers programs contain letters from the WB Educational Department. There are also several programs for premieres and royal screenings in England. The Programs Sorted by Title series also contains booklets produced by theaters, in some cases for the same films.

Series 7. Theater programs

Scope and Contents

Although this series is titled "Theatre Programs" in fact programs for all types of non-film performing arts events are filed here, including drama, musicals, revues, operettas, dance (ballet, folk dance, modern), music, comedy, magic, circus, burlesque, puppetry, ice shows, and others.
Programs have been minimally described with only the most basic information captured, i.e. title and date when present. Material dates from the 1880s to 1979, mostly 1940s-1950s, mostly in California and New York but some from Seattle, Chicago, Boston and elsewhere.
Frequently encountered names include Theatre Guild, Sol Hurok, Gene Mann Paul Small, Olsen & Johnson, San Francisco and Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Associations, Sammy Lewis & Danny Dare, the Circle Star Theatre in San Carlos, the Valley Music Theatre in Woodland Hills, the Carousel in West Covina, AND the Melodyland Theatre in Anaheim.
Some items have been separated from related material. A few appear to be removed from scrapbooks, and are partially cropped or display other damage.
Venues are noted when printed on programs themselves, except if there are multiple programs for different performances. Featured performers are usually noted if their names are most prominent on the cover. Some may superficially appear to be duplicate copies, but actually feature actors or other changes.
Many programs come from the collections of David Suransky and Betty Janss, both of whome have their own collections as well. Janss was a drama critic on the Peninsula during the 1950s and 60s, and her annotations are to be found on many programs.

Series 8. Theater posters [forthcoming]

Series 9. Theater - promotional photographs

Scope and Contents

Although there are a few snapshots of actors and performances, the majority of photos in this series are promotional photographs for theatrical productions. These are not exclusively for drama and include dancers, musicians and other performers as well. Many items have been separated from related material; see the Theatre Program series in particular.
The number of prints has not been noted, although there is usually more than one, some from different productions of the same work. Notes and dates on the reverse of prints have not been transcribed. There are a few autographed portraits, including several to Dave or David (likely collector David Suransky), but most are part of standard publicity kits sent to the media, especially for Geary Theatre and Curran Theatre events. At least one ("A Night in Havana") is marked as from lobby display at the Geary. Photographer credits include Van Damm, Maurice Seymour and others.
