Correspondence
1912-2008
1944-1975
Scope and Contents
The first series in the Kanitz papers is his personal and professional correspondence. The personal correspondence (referred
to as just "correspondence") consists of letters between friends, family, and colleagues. While that might sometimes include
information about Kanitz's professional life, the subseries of professional correspondence consists of the more official paperwork
regarding his career as a composer: royalty checks, membership paperwork, and other such forms.
The personal correspondence is mostly from earlier in Kanitz's life: his years in Vienna, corresponding with friends and collegues
in the German-speaking music world. Then there is a gap throughout the 1930s, a period of great change for Kanitz. His correspondence
then picks up again in 1944, after the death of his wife, as he prepares to move to California and change career paths. There
is another gap throughout the 1950s, and then his correspondence becomes almost entirely professional, regarding royalties,
fees, and other concerns related to his career.

Works by Kanitz
1915-1971
1945-1965
Scope and Contents
This is the primary series in the collection, as it is made up of original musical scores, libretti, and other writings, all
by Kanitz. Some of them are printed, some are scanned and photocopied, and others are original manuscripts. Within this section,
there are many different copies and versions of the same works.
Libretti and Writing
1920-1964
1953-1959
Scope and Contents
This sub-series contains the libretti and other writings related to Kanitz's compositions. Often, he was not the author of
the libretti to his operas and operettas, and friends or other colleagues would work in partnership with him. But because
he worked so closely with them, often even acting as the translator, they are housed under the "Works by Kanitz" series.

Music Scores
1915-1971
1945-1965
Scope and Contents
This sub-series is the foundation of the collection, containing Kanitz's original scores from throughout his long career.
They have been organized alphabetically for ease of use, although titles are not always exactly the same across all copies
of the score. Some scores are bound, some are loose; some scores are in completed form and others are still drafts.
The scores entitled, "I. Akt," "II. Akt" or "III. Akt" are likely all part of one larger score, possibly Kanitz's "Himmelsucher"
(later titled "Wunder-Wilan"). However, there is no absolute designation on the separated scores themselves, so they have
been kept separately as originally found.

Recordings
1946-1975
Scope and Contents
Lastly, the "Recordings" series is split into two sub-series for magnetic audio tapes and vinyl record albums. The vast majority
of these are recordings of performances of Kanitz's own work, and there are many duplicates throughout. In general, the record
albums are from earlier (1940s-1950s) while the magnetic tapes are from slightly later (1960s-1970s). Not all of them are
in good condition, and Kanitz himself had written notes on the recordings if a record was broken, or if the tape was scratched.

Record Albums
1946-1961
Scope and Contents
The record albums in this sub-series are mostly recordings of performances of Kanitz's compositions. There are a number of
duplicates, and some records are masters for other recordings. There are a few broken records, which Kanitz himself had labeled.
Most of them are 12" discs, with a few smaller. They are organized in alphabetical order on the finding aid for ease of use,
but physically remain in their original order. There seems to have been another ordering system at some point for these records,
as most are numbered at the bottom of the sleeve. However, they were not found in order, and have been kept as-is except for
the use of some acid-free sleeves. The original sleeves have been kept next to the new, acid-free ones.

Works by Other Composers
1890-1967
Scope and Contents
This series, like the one before, is once again musical scores, libretti, and writing. However, these are ones not written
by Kanitz, but rather annotated by him and retained for his personal reference. There is a large variety of scores within
this series: some of them date from his time in Austria during the interwar period, some belonged to his wife, Gertrude Reif,
and others were given to him by the people who had composed them (often these are signed to Kanitz with a note). The majority
of them are published scores, but there are a few from friends that are manuscript/hand-written versions of the works.
