Biography/Administrative History
Louis Avrom Strait was born in Denver, CO, September 27, 1907. He attended local schools, receiving his A.B. (1930) and A.M.
(1932) from the University of Colorado. He was granted the PhD (Physics) from the University of California, Berkeley in 1937.
Dr. Strait was an instructor, then asst. professor in physics at Colorado from 1930 to 1932. He was invited to set up a spectrographic
laboratory at UCSF by the deans of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry, and was its director until retirement. He was a fellow
(1937-38), then moved from instructor to professor of Biophysics, and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, holding joint titles in these
schools, becoming emeritus in 1971. The following year UCSF conferred upon him the honorary LL.D.
He was a civilian with the Atomic Energy Commission and in the Office of Scientific Research and Development, 1943-45, and
held a Fulbright professorship in Cairo, 1950-51. Dr. Strait was a member of AAAS, the American Chemical Society, the Optical
Society of America, American Physics Society, Society of Applied Spectroscopy, the American Pharmaceutical Association and
the New York Academy of Science. His research interests included spectroscopy and molecular structure, chemical and biological
applications; H-bonding properties of biogenic and other amines.
