1945-1958, undated
General Physical Description note: 184 linear feet (35 rolls, 10 flatfile folders, 7 boxes)
Scope and Contents note
The Foreign Building Operations (F.B.O.), now known as the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations, was charged with initiating
and maintaining overseas building for the Department of State and the Government of the United States. The Foreign Building
Operations Regional Office in France commissioned Carlhian to prepare a catalog of furnishings to be used for administrative
or private use in the American diplomatic services created in Europe after WWII. Every type of furniture or object designed
by Carlhian was assigned a stock number. The firm prepared plans and drawings for them, enabling their reproduction. The series
comprises plans for office furniture and objects and plans for furniture for the private residences of the diplomatic services.

Fabric samples, Series IX.
1921-1961
General Physical Description note: 68 linear feet (43 boxes)
Scope and Contents note
The series comprises fabric samples used for upholstery and drapery that were kept by the successive Carlhian firms to enable
them to complete or renew orders. Each sample is grouped by client, whose name is identified on a paper label folded over
one end that also in a number of cases provides the date and location of the project. A number of samples are with bits of
passementerie attached. Natural fibers are represented, including silk, wool, cotton, linen and blends of the same, while
there are also early synthetics such as rayon. Weaves include twills, failles, and satins, cut and uncut velvets of different
weights, brocaded and damask patterned weaves, and plain weave variations. Almost all the samples appear to be machine woven,
with patterns both woven and applied. The applied patterns are both machine printed and silk screened. Few of the samples
are made with metallic threads. They are 15 x 5 cm. on average, and usually rectangular in shape.
Arrangement note
Bundles of samples are filed by client names listed in alphabetical order, where identified.

Documentation for boiseries, Series X.
1913-1988
General Physical Description note: 43 linear feet (59 flat file folders, 4 rolls, 9 boxes)
Scope and Contents note
The Carlhian firm gathered documentation on boiseries, primarily French wood paneling dating from the 18th century, which
became a specialty of the firm. The documentation is comprised of plans, drawings, measurements, and layouts of nearly 300
boiseries that entered the firm's stock. Carlhian often acquired them from their original site, restored them and adapted
the architectural elements for installation in clients' interiors. The panels were often photographed before being taken from
their original location, and again in the residences and apartments where they were installed. Details of the boiseries were
photographed as well at the firm's workshops.
Arrangement note
Carlhian's arrangement by original location of boiseries, stock numbers, and by style (i.e. Louis XIV, Louis XV, Empire) has
been retained.

Documentation for scenic wallpaper, Series XI.
circa 1920-1974
General Physical Description note: 3 linear feet (2 boxes, 3 flatfile folders)
Scope and Contents note
André Carlhian developed a keen interest in scenic wallpaper. Printed on paper with the use of woodblocks, scenic wallpaper
sets were illusionistic decors of mythological and historical scenes, landscapes and views that displayed a variety of trompe-l'œil
effects. André Carlhian was in contact with Nancy McClelland, who wrote the first reference work on the subject,
Historic wall-papers (1924). He was also in contact with another pioneer in the research and discovery of this medium, Henri Clouzot, director
of the Musée Galliera in Paris, whose publication on scenic papers was published in 1931. André Carlhian became an expert
in scenic or panoramic wallpaper, and acquired hundreds of sets of wallpaper. The Carlhian firm established itself as the
chief supplier of French scenic wallpaper to the United States. André Carlhian prepared a catalog of 110 French scenic wallpaper
sets, whose documentation became the basis for the research publication
Papiers peints panoramiques, published by the Musée des arts décoratifs and Flammarion in Paris.
Arrangement note
The series comprises watercolor drawings, exhibition catalogs and posters, and research files.
