Scope and Contents note

The James Hepburn field note collection consists of two bound volumes, a field journal and a catalog, spanning the years 1852-1868. The notes detail Hepburn's collecting activities from localities within California, Washington, and British Columbia.

Biographical note

James Edward Hepburn was born in 1811 in London. He attended Trinity College Cambridge and was educated as a barrister prior to immigrating to the United States. He took up residence in San Francisco and Victoria and collected extensively in the Pacific Northwest. Hepburn's sole publication was in Ibis (1869 pp. 126-127). The majority of his specimen collection can be found at the University Museum of Zoology, Cambridge.
