Series 1. Native Americans and Basket Collecting Trips

Scope and Content
This series contains nine photograph albums and many individual photographs. The majority of the photographs are of Native
Americans of the Northwest Coast, California and the Southwest of North America.
The photographs were taken by Grace Nicholson or her assistant, Mr. Carroll S. Hartman, on their travels to buy Indian baskets
and other artifacts primarily between 1903 and 1912. Both Nicholson and Hartman
took photographs during the trips, and some images depict the same scene, photographed with two different cameras and film
sizes--possibly from cameras each was carrying. For this reason, attribution is dual:
Photographs by Grace Nicholson/Carroll S. Hartman. There are also many postcards and commercial photographs with the photographers
identified where known. Many people and places are identified on the backs of
photos in Grace Nicholson's handwriting.

Scope and Content Note
This subseries contains nine photograph albums with many views of Native Americans; baskets and basket collections; Grace
Nicholson's store and
home in Pasadena, California;
and images of Nicholson and others.
Albums A-F consist of six albums with approximately 500 photos each, mostly documenting Grace Nicholson's six basket-collecting
trips between 1902 and 1912 to
Native American communities of the Northwest Coast, California, and Southwest. The photographs are black-and-white prints,
mostly 3 x 4 inches, pasted in albums measuring 11 1/4 x 15 inches,
with many captions in Nicholson's handwriting.
Albums G-I are smaller volumes and consist of a volume of 25 commercial photographs of Indians (Album G); a volume with 25
photographs of Grace Nicholson's first collecting trip to Ukiah and Northern California in 1903 (Album H);
and a volume of 29 photographs of various Native Americans made by an unknown compiler and later acquired by Grace Nicholson
(Album I).
Note
There are no titles on the album volumes; album letters were assigned later by Huntington Library catalogers.
Many of the Pomo Indian and related photographs were identified by Sally McLendon, professor at Hunter College, who worked
closely with this collection in 1993.

This album contains 554 photographs taken between 1906 and 1908 in California and Nevada. Most photographs were taken by Grace
Nicholson and Carroll S. Hartman, though there are some by commercial photographers A.W. Ericson and J.A. Meiser, as well
as unidentified photographers.
Tribes represented: Hupa; Maidu; Mesa Grande [Diegueno]; Paiute; Pomo; Tolowa; Tule River Indians; Yokuts; Washoe.

Scope and Content Note
This album contains 428 photographs taken primarily between 1905 and 1908 in British Columbia, California, and Washington,
with many views of baskets and basket collections, as well
as some views of Grace Nicholson's shop at 46 N. Los Robles in Pasadena. Most photographs were taken by Nicholson and Carroll
S. Hartman, though there are some by commercial photographers
W.T. Fitch, Benjamin A. Gifford, J.A. Haran, Frank La Roche, and S. G. Morse, as well as unidentified photographers. Some
of the commercial photographs date before 1905.

S. Hartman, though there are some by commercial photographers George Butler;

Scope and Content Note
This small album contains 25 photographs documenting Grace Nicholson's first collecting trip to Ukiah and vicinity in Northern
California in July 1903 and includes photographs of Pomo Indian William Benson and a parade in Ukiah. All of the photographs
were taken by Grace Nicholson and Carroll S. Hartman.

Album I, ca. 1873-1905
Scope and Content Note
This album contains 29 photographs of Native Americans from various regions, dating from approximately 1873 to 1909, made
by an unknown compiler and acquired by Grace Nicholson later.
The first page has an ink-stamped name: "Abraham Mayer," who may have been the original owner. The photographs include cartes
de visite of Modoc Indian prisoners of war by Louis Heller,
as well as cabinet cards, Victoria cards, and magazine clippings dated from 1902 to 1905. Photographs by A.W. Ericson, Louis
Heller, and unidentified photographers.

Scope and Content Note
This subseries contains individual photographs arranged geographically, beginning in the Northwest Coast region, heading south
through California, and ending with the Southwest. Tribes are listed within geographic regions.
There are some photographs of the same people and scenes in Albums A-F, but the images here are unique and do not appear in
the albums. Many of the photographs have names or places written on the back by Grace Nicholson.
All images are photographic prints unless indicated: (photographic postcards), (postcards) or other.
Note about attribution of photographs: Grace Nicholson and her employee/associate, Mr. Carroll S. Hartman, both took photographs
during their trips, and in many cases, it is difficult to determine the photographer. Sometimes the same scene was
photographed with two different cameras and film sizes—possibly from cameras each was carrying—see (562-565) and (533-534)
for examples. For this reason, attribution is dual: Photographs by Grace Nicholson/Carroll S. Hartman.
There are also many commercial photographs and postcards, and when known the photographers and/or publishers are noted below.

2.2 Building of the Treasure House and later views
1924-1930s; last store, 1947
Historical note
In 1924, Grace Nicholson hired architects Marston, Van Pelt & Maybury to build a grand Chinese-style building on the site
of her current house.
The new "Grace Nicholson Treasure House of Oriental Art" was devoted to Asian art, with a store, galleries, a Chinese garden
courtyard and an apartment that would
become her new home. The property was eventually deeded to the City of Pasadena in 1943 and became the Pasadena Art Institute,
though Nicholson continued to live there. In 1954, the
Institute was renamed the Pasadena Art Museum. The Pacificulture Foundation founded the Pacific Asia Museum there in 1971.

and his family; Pasadena; the Hotel Maryland; the Rose Parade; and Nicholson's

5.1 Negatives in cold storage
Scope and Content Note
Original negatives for the Grace Nicholson/Carroll S. Hartman photographs found in Series 1-3, including prints in the albums,
though some prints in
the collection do not have a corresponding negative. Also includes negatives with no corresponding print that are listed
as "neg only" in the container list
for Series 1-3.
Access Information
Access to the original negatives is restricted. Arrangements for viewing negatives must be made in advance with the Curator
of Photographs.
