Historical or Biographical Note

Stuart P. Walsh, who collected these documents, was head of the Seattle Boy Scouts and instrumental in starting the first Sea Scout Chapter in the city of San Francisco.
Walsh wrote five manuals for Boy Scout leaders including the pamphlet, Sea Scouts Afloat: Hints on Cruising in 1932 with his co-author Harry B. Jones. The yacht WHITE LIGHT sailed out of Seattle.
The passenger vessel the PRINCESS SOPHIA was built in 1912 by Bow, McLachlan and Company of Paisley, Scotland. The ship was built for the Canadian Pacific Line's Alaska run, and made its maiden voyage in June of 1912. On October 25, 1918, the steam ship struck Vanderbilt Reef, in Alaskan territory, and all 268 passengers on board were killed. According to "The Wreck of the Princess Sophia" (http://www.ssislander.co.uk/sophia.html), the ship's sinking was "Southeast Alaska's worst maritime disaster."
