Peninsula Center Library, Palos Verdes Library District, Rolling Hills Estates, CA.
The Peninsula Center Library is the second of three PVLD facilities. The original building was designed by architects A.
Quincy Jones and Frederick E. Emmons and was completed in 1967. In 1995, architects Zimmer Gunsul Frasca (ZGF) renovated and
expanded the space which nearly doubled its size. Residents overwhelmingly approved a local bond measure which in part supported
the renovation. Budget cuts by the state of California and redirection of local property taxes from special districts had
a severe impact on PVLD's budget. Construction delays and defects, which ultimately led to extended litigation, further added
to PVLD's budget woes. Cost-cutting measures included reduced hours at all libraries and staff reorganization.
Arranged mostly chronologically. Summary of major topics noted in articles included in folder one.
Includes photocopies of articles from area newspapers about PVLD and covers topics such as local bond measures to expand the
Peninsula Center Library; community reaction to the library expansion and furnishings; Save Our Libraries organization; cuts
to renovation costs; library automation; affects of California state budget cuts; staff reductions and low morale; Library
Board of Trustees elections; and litigation resulting from the expansion.
