Andrew J. Stone, gold seeker, traveled to California from Dunbarton, New Hampshire, in
1852. He sailed on the steamship "Northern Light" to Nicaragua, crossed the isthmus, and
continued his journey on the steamship "Lewis," arriving in San Francisco after a journey of
sixty-three days. Stone worked in the mines in El Dorado and Placer Counties, in a sawmill,
and as a steam car engineer for a quartz mine. After his return home, he served as Captain
of Company F of the 9th Regiment of New Hampshire Infantry and died following a wound
received at the Battle of the Spottsylvania Court House in May 1864.
A collection of letters discussing Stone's voyage by ship from New York to San Francisco
and life in the California mines. There are also a few letters from friends in California,
written to Stone after his return home to New Hampshire.
Processed by Huntington Library Staff in approximately 1950; in August 2023, Gayle M.
Richardson created the finding aid.
