Biography / Administrative History
Naturalist, author, conservationist. Considered a precursor of
environmentalist movement. Through his numerous books and articles, which
emphasize importance of wilderness experiences to cultivation of spiritual
values and maintenance of high-quality civilization, Muir brought appreciation
of natural environment to national consciousness. Instrumental in creation of
National Park system, Muir was directly involved in creation of Yosemite,
Sequoia, Grand Canyon, and Mt. Rainier parks. He also instrumental in the
creation of the Sierra Club.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection of Muir’s personal library is curated alphabetically by
author in his own bookcases from his Martinez, California home. Most remarkable
about this collection is that many volumes contain Muir’s own notations in the
form of drawings, marginalia, and personal indexes. Researchers can follow the
genesis of his idea from when he read them to articles and books he wrote.
